There are two things that motivated them to make the trip. The first is that Ted had wanted to visit the Eisenhower Birthplace Site in downtown Denison and when he learned that there was a highly recommended campsite a few minutes away, he knew that he would try to go if the chance ever arose. The second impetus was that the park's website described a Fishing Derby taking place on Saturday morning where kids and their parents could fish with all of the equipment provided for free. Caleb had never been fishing before, so he was eager to try it out.
After the first half hour without a nibble, Caleb initially was a bit frustrated, even going so far as to say it was "boring" to go fishing. That didn't last very long though when he caught the 7 1/4 inch Blue Gill fish shown below. When another hour produced no additional fish, they decided to pack it in for the day, but just before leaving Caleb turned the pole over to his dad for a few minutes when he caught the much smaller Blue Gill, also shown for comparison purposes. They had a good talk about the meaning of the word "ironic" in the context of a little kid out-fishing his parent with regards to the size of their catches.
Other highlights of the trip included building a real fire (the last two times were too wet or restricted) to roast marshmallows, making a late-night hike to explore the park, swimming at an idyllic cove with a secluded sandstone cave, and having a personal tour of the Eisenhower birthplace and grounds.

I hope you can get a dual frame and put the photos of these two fish and their catchers side by side. I laughed till I cried when I saw Ted's little fishy! mom
